Design Basics
These design tips will help you choose the perfect organized closet space, customized to fit your storage needs throughout the home. Before you select the design that’s right for you, ask yourself these questions:
- What percentage of my wardrobe is long hang? Short hang?
- How much of the closet do I want to devote to folded items, shoes, belts, ties, boxes or luggage?
- What percentage of my wardrobe do I wear a lot? What can be stored away?
Once you’ve answered these questions, we’ve made it simple for you to select your custom closet. For example, if you have more long hang then short, then “Love My Dresses” would fit your needs best. Need more shelves then hanging, then “Stack it Up” is the closet for you. Lots of shoes? Then “Shoe Fanatic” is your best bet!
If you ask yourself the above questions and you’re not sure, don’t worry, it’s safe to use the 50/25/25 rule to choose your custom closet design - 50% double hang, 25% single hang, 25% shelving. This closet solution would be named “The Basics.” Keep in mind too that using double hang is the best way to maximize space.
Measuring Your Space
- Measure the width and depth before you get started selecting a design. Always measure the width in two places, the top and bottom of the closet, because sometimes these measurements vary slightly. If they vary, use the smaller of the two measurements.
- Always subtract 1" from wall-to-wall (width) measurement to allow for wall variation. Watch and learn.
