Storage Terminology and Measurements

Definitions

height: vertical/bottom-to-top;
depth: front to rear edge;
width: horizontal/side-to-side

Closet Types

Reach-in

a closet that has one storage wall and is a minimum of 24” deep

Step-in

common for pantry, linen or entry way, this closet is a
minimum of 3’ x 3’ and has storage on side wall or back wall

Walk-in

commonly an “L” or “U” configuration, this closet has enough depth
to walk inside it

Closet Types

Headers/Soffit

the wall space between the top of the door frame and the ceiling

Offset

the depth of space required for one wall of hanging clothes or storage components to clear (and not touch) those on the wall adjacent to it; the depth of an offset depends on the storage components on the adjacent walls; this term applies to all closets except reach-ins and step-ins
